Augmented Reality Gets a Major Face.com Lift

Face.com has powered the first-ever “Social Augmented Reality” app, developed by Comverse, the world’s leading provider of software and systems enabling value-added services, BSS and active customer management, and IP communications. On demonstration today at the annual Mobile World Congress In Barcelona, the app dissolves the barrier between mobile and social network contacts to create a seamless world for its users.

More insights at Gizmodo, a video and screenshots released by Comverse, live from the conference:

Thanks for all those who showed up at the booth, the Comverse booth is going to remain open throughout the show.

There is no Michael Cogan on facebook
    This isn’t a working prototype it’s a mockup…and far less impressive than Tat’s virtual identity…

Thanks for your diligence John, although it appears that Michael’s profile is available for public search.

We’ve noticed some people search hiccups on facebook yesterday which could be the reason you weren’t able to find it.

The show at MWC is open until Thursday, and if you’re around, I invite you to check out the Comverse booth to get a first hand impression. It’s true that at this point it’s only a demo, but I can assure you it’s a real live working one :)

      Gil,

Will your app have the potential to facilitate transactions in “personal currencies,” as discussed in Doug Rushkoff’s forum?

If so, we’d welcome opportunities to help with beta testing of AR-enabled solutions of this kind. The Ning group here may be able to provide inputs in building a personal currency mashup… http://ilnk.me/prslcurncy

      Look forward to hearing.

        Hi Mark,

We believe that on-the-go face recognition is a great way for connecting and information exchange, as long as those are voluntary.

As you intuitively suggested in your post, that basic ability to access profile details of a person standing right in front of you, is a great first step for follow-up exchanges, starting with basic (public) information that can link to a more substantial exchange channels (e.g. real or personal currencies). At the same time, we must make sure that any such information isn’t available without opting-in, to discourage stalking, and avoid catching people unprepared to lose their obscurity.

The developer of this specific application is Comverse, and still too early to know when it’ll be ready for testing. However we are opening up our platform to additional partners, so do stay tuned for updates!
